Harvard athletes secured a record-breaking 13 Olympic medals, surpassing their previous high of 12 medals achieved at the first modern Olympics in 1896. This impressive performance solidified Harvard’s position as a powerhouse in the world of athletics.
A Wave of Gold and Glory
The 13 medals earned by Harvard athletes included an astounding eight gold medals, one silver medal, and four bronze medals. This incredible achievement showcased the exceptional talent and dedication of these remarkable individuals.
One of Harvard’s shining stars was Gabby Thomas, a 2019 graduate and a track and field star from Northampton, Massachusetts. Gabby’s performance at the Games was nothing short of spectacular, as she took home a remarkable three gold medals. Her journey to success was fueled by the unwavering support of her Harvard community.
“Harvard was a great community for me,” she shared. “From my teammates and coaches to my friends there, everyone has been a vital part of this journey.” Gabby was deeply touched by the presence of her Harvard support system in Paris. A group of 30 individuals from her Harvard network traveled to the Games to cheer her on. “I saw them when I was on the starting blocks,” Gabby exclaimed. “It was an incredible and unique moment. Having them there meant the world to me.”
Legacy-Making Moments
Another Harvard athlete who made history in Paris was rising senior Lauren Scruggs. Lauren’s performance cemented her legacy in the world of fencing. She became the first Black American female fencer to win an individual medal at the Olympics! Lauren’s extraordinary accomplishment resonated with countless individuals and served as an inspiration to future generations. She returned home to Boston and Harvard with two medals in hand.
“It feels like a dream,” Lauren shared. “Everyone back home in Boston and at Harvard has been sending me good luck and support.” Lauren’s achievements were not only a testament to her skills but also a testament to the dedication and support of her community.
From Rowing to Cycling Success
Kristen Faulkner, a former member of Harvard’s rowing team, has embraced a new chapter in her athletic journey. After graduating from Harvard, she discovered a passion for cycling. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she brought home two gold medals for Team USA in Paris.
“Being a college athlete taught me time management and discipline,” Kristen said. “Those skills were essential in my early days of cycling while working full-time in venture capital.” This highlights the invaluable lessons learned through collegiate athletics, which prepare individuals for success in various aspects of life.
Harvard’s Triumphant Showing
With its impressive 13 medals, Harvard emerged as the top performer among Ivy League schools, New England universities, and the NCAA FCS. The university’s impact extended beyond the medal count, as 26 athletes with Harvard ties competed at the Games, with 14 representing Team USA.
Harvard’s Director of Athletics, Erin McDermott, expressed immense pride in her athletes’ accomplishments and the university’s representation on Team USA. “Seeing their joy and knowing all the hard work that went into achieving it is truly incredible,” McDermott shared. The 2024 Summer Olympics officially concluded with the Closing Ceremony, leaving a legacy of unforgettable moments and inspiring performances. The next Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.

McDermott is eager to continue Harvard’s momentum at the upcoming Games. “We hope to see the same number, if not more, of Harvard athletes contributing to Team USA and the Olympic competition,” she said. “We aspire to have a fantastic display of American pride as we host the Games in Los Angeles.” Harvard University’s record-breaking performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics is a testament to the exceptional talent, dedication, and unwavering support that thrives within the Harvard community.
