The 2023 Athlete of the Year Awards: A Celebration of Aquatic Excellence

The excitement is building for the 2023 Athlete of the Year Awards, honoring outstanding male and female athletes in swimming, diving, artistic swimming, high diving, and open water swimming. Voting closes on March 3rd at 11:59pm CET, with the winners announced between March 25th and April 3rd.

The anticipation for this prestigious event is palpable as we prepare to recognize the incredible achievements of these remarkable athletes.

A Look Back: Rebecca Adlington’s Triumph

To get a sense of the award’s significance, let’s rewind to 2008 and the first female winner, Rebecca Adlington. Her story is one of sheer determination and brilliance. She became the first British woman in 48 years to win Olympic gold in the 400m freestyle at the Beijing Olympics.

It was a truly momentous occasion for British swimming.

Not only did she secure gold, but she also led her teammate, Joanne Jackson, to a 1-3 finish for Great Britain. This incredible performance placed her alongside Anita Lonsbrough, the last British woman to claim an Olympic title in 1960.

This accomplishment cemented Adlington’s place in the history books.

But Adlington’s triumphs didn’t stop there. She went on to win the 800m freestyle title, breaking Janet Evans’ 19-year world record with an astounding time of 8 minutes and 14.10 seconds. Her victory marked an all-European podium, with Alessia Filippi of Italy and Lotte Friis of Denmark joining her.

Her talent and resilience shone brightly on the global stage.

Guided by her coach, Bill Furniss, Adlington was named the top female pool swimmer at the 2008 LEN Awards, a testament to her exceptional skills and commitment.

Her achievements were recognized by her peers and the wider swimming community.

A Humble Champion’s Perspective

Reflecting on her victory, Adlington shared her humble perspective, stating, “I was just a girl from Mansfield, I didn’t really realize the importance of LEN and European Aquatics in general.” She emphasized the significance of her coach’s encouragement, “He really told me, ‘this is amazing that you have won this.’”

Her words showcase her humility and gratitude for the support system that propelled her success.

The fact that the award was voted for by her peers added a layer of meaning, “I remember thinking amazing that people have voted and insane. There’s just something really nice about it.” Her joy and appreciation for the recognition are evident in her words.

The honor of being chosen by her fellow athletes held a special place in her heart.

Facing the Giants of European Swimming

Adlington’s victory was especially remarkable considering the formidable competition she faced. She spoke about the legendary figures she competed against, “Some of the names in European swimming – obviously Pellegrini was huge, I remember idolising Pellegrini for years – but even beforehand (before Beijing) she was such a big name in swimming, they were such big names in European swimming at that time,” she said.

She acknowledges the strength and influence of the other athletes she competed against, further highlighting her incredible achievement.

She continued, “That’s why it was even more incredible because I was just this newbie: I hadn’t done anything until Beijing. So it is amazing to go up against such amazing, incredible, really strong athletes and come out as the winner – that means even more.” Her words demonstrate her unwavering determination and the thrill of overcoming formidable obstacles.

Her humble attitude shines through as she emphasizes the incredible talent she faced and the power of her own resilience.

Adlington’s victory serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, showcasing the power of hard work, dedication, and belief in oneself. Her story reminds us that even in the face of extraordinary competition, anything is possible with the right mindset and unwavering commitment.
