Looking back to the inaugural edition in 1972, Red Star of the Central African Republic etched their names in history by claiming the first ever FIBA Africa Champions Cup title. In the following year, Hit Tresor, also from the Central African Republic, secured a second consecutive title for the country.
The FIBA Africa Champions Cup then saw a shift in dominance, with AS Forces Armees of Senegal claiming three championships within four years. They remain, along with Primeiro de Agosto, the only teams to have won the tournament more than twice.
The 1980s witnessed the rise of new champions, with AS Police of Senegal adding another title to the country’s growing list of victories. Clube de Desportos do Maxaquene of Mozambique, El Ittihad Alexandria of Egypt, and Asec Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire each added their names to the list of champions, signifying the growing diversity and competition in the tournament.
